A5 Anglesey

Go ahead for the first section of the new A5 dual carriageway across Anglesey has been given by the Welsh Office. A Welsh Office statement said work begins next Spring on the first eleven miles of the road from Llanfairpwll to Bryngwran, at a cost of £65 million. The decision follows protests from environmental groups and a week-long public enquiry. Five petitions and one hundred and fifty letters of protest were received by the public enquiry and fifteen people gave evidence, while thirteen letters in support of the road were received and ten people gave evidence. Those against the road argued that it will have a detrimental impact on the environment, particularly the proposed cutting at Parc-y-Coed, which would also involve a considerable loss of woodland.
