Eclectic City Relived
One year ago, an empty building which had previously been a community resource centre was re-opened by the Eclectic City Collective in Newcastle. Evicted after a month, the Council and developers have done nothing since.
On October 1st this year, the collective held a birthday party to highlight this: “the fact that this building has been laying empty for over a year is a disgrace. They should be ashamed. We offered a free place for entertainment, meeting and information - these things just don’t exist anymore in Newcastle’s city centre.”
The empty building, and other empties nearby were decorated with posters and slogans saying ‘council shame’, ‘community space not derelict waste’ etc, along with drawings of what the building could have been used for. The paint remains, pointing out to everyone who walks by that developers and the Council are more interested in profits than people.
