Victory In Hastings
On July 14th the government cancelled the Hastings and Bexhill Bypasses.
This is a real victory for the coalition of local groups fighting the roads and a sign that the threat of direct action can still stop major developments.
The £240 million scheme was set to destroy some of the South East coasts most wonderful wildlife areas. The announcement was a genuine surprise. A 10,000 copy ‘bulldozer pledge’ was set to be launched and plans were afoot for site-based resistance.
It’s believed these Bypasses were part of a south coast motorway from Folkestone to Honiton. Hopefully this victory is a nail in the coffin for other schemes too.
