Papuan Protestors Shot
During protests against the World Bank and IMF held on June 26th in Waigana, Papua New Guinea the police shot dead 3 and wounded 17 protestors. This followed a 5-day peaceful sit-in outside the Prime Ministers office where up to 3000 people gathered opposing the privatisation of public utilities. Police waited until numbers had dwindled to around several hundred and then used batons, tear gas and automatic weapons.
With the news of the shooting people took to the streets but were also met with violence from the police.
Protests against the World Bank and IMF have been staged by many different groups throughout PNG including the army. Earlier this year soldiers at the Murray barracks seized weapons and demanded that the WB & IMF leave their country. Source: ELP
