Harmondsworth

On June 30th about 250 people picketed the new Harmondsworth Detention Centre near Heathrow. Despite a simultaneous demo outside Campsfield, a minibus came from Oxford, another from East London and the Committee to Defend Asylum Seekers organised a coach. A car cavalcade drove around beforehand bedecked with posters, balloons and a loudspeaker telling local people about the new prison for families at Harmondsworth.

Despite the efforts of the guards, refugees inside the centre realised what was happening and were able to wave to anyone who climbed the fence. To the obvious concern of security guards, we marched around the entire site, about a one mile walk.

The protest finished with songs from Robb Johnson and the Red and Green choir. Thanks to them and to NCADC, CDAS, Newham churches and everyone else.
