Fire Sparks Protest

Early on May 14th, exasperated residents and incinerator protesters chained themselves to the gates of the controversial Byker Incinerator, Newcastle. One local 75 year ‘chainee’ said, “We are desperate. Our complaints have been ignored for over 20 years!” After several serious fires at the plant involving waste containing heavy metals and cancer causing dioxins, the authorities have failed to close the plant, review work practices or test the area for dioxins following.
