New Social Centre For Leeds

On 24th April, a collective drawn from a range of groups in the Leeds area - including Earth First! and Green Action - reclaimed an unused church complex at Leeds University, and established the ‘A Spire’ autonomous zone.

A key function of the centre is to promote activism through education (workshops, displays etc.) and inspire participation, both in the collective and in direct action. The initial range of facilities include a vegan cafe, bookshop/library area, gig and party room, meditation area, and bike maintenance. There are also facilities for arts and crafts and children’s activities. The collective is in touch with a range of local community groups to try and extend these resources and to involve as many people as possible. The university, who own the building, have stated that they will be going to court after the Mayday weekend, but the collective intend resist the eviction if it comes before 10 weeks into the project.
