Ploughshares Prison Protests

On 19th Sept, five Trident Ploughshares 2000 activists, remanded for objecting to a toxic world and genocide, held a peaceful protest in the Scottish women's prison, Cornton Vale. The protest was against the launch of the new sub Vengeance. The prison authorities reacted with brutal force, injuring two of the women. One of the women received the threat "walk or I'll hurt you". The action which warranted this response was the refusal to eat, talk and leave the cells for the day. Another action was thwarted the night before by a strip search, which revealed a banner made of a bedsheet with messages stuck to it in toothpaste. So many complaints about the women's treatment were sent to the Scottish Office that the fax machine broke down.

Angie Zelter, Anja Light and Jens Light were tried on 22nd and were found, in the words of his honour "Guilty but with regret". Ian Thompson's trial was adjourned, due to his solicitor possibly breaching the official secrets act. The plot thickens….
