Corporate Action Network
On April 20, activists from the Corporate Action Network invaded the offices of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) protesting against the Multilateral Agreement on Investment(MAI). Appalled by the ICC's stance supporting the MAI, the activists occupied the office of chairman Richard Bate, refusing to leave until a meeting had been arranged. Mr Bate claimed to be happy to argue with activists as long as they contact him (0171 823 2811) to make an appointment.
The main MAI negotiations have stopped temporarily, to give time for informal intergovernmental talks to iron out any problems. There was only one arrest at the action - a cameraman making a film about cameramen being arrested; the police attitude to him changed completely when they realised what he was doing.
