Zapatista Picket

The Mexican government was blamed for the massacre at Acteal in Chiapas by a recent picket outside its Embassy in London. A large banner reading 'Murderers' was stretched along crash barriers. Naming the ruling party, the crowd chanted, 'PRI-istas, asesinos!'. They demanded 'Fuera tropas de Chiapas! (troops out of Chiapas).

The Ambassador declined the invitation to come outside, but an Embassy official invited a small delegation to meet him inside. Four delegates were led to his office and made brief statements. He undertook to convey their concerns to the Mexican government, but gave no clear answer to their questions. According to the Ambassador the government is searching for a peaceful solution, but he would not explain why they still renege on the San Andres Accords. Contact 0181-679 6930.
