Wells Relief Road
On Friday 10th January the official opening of the £5.5 million Wells 'Relief Road' was disrupted by thirty people. The new road is six kilometres long and ploughs through woodland and small playing fields. It has been stated that Wells will need another bypass in ten years. John Watts, the Roads Minister, had been invited to open it but was jeered off the stage and didn’t even get to cut the official opening ribbon as it was snatched away. From the stage he asked how many of the protesters were local. When it became clear that a large number were, one protester called out, “how many of you officials are?” They declined to comment and John beat a quick retreat back to London!
