Another successful Reclaim the Streets in Manchester on the 19th October saw a chunk of Oxford Road declared a temporary car free zone.
Banners were unfurled, a tripod erected, and handsome spider-monkey person scampered to the top. Enter much loved Desert Storm sound system, with their own special brand of over-bearing techno-torture and the crowd went into dance frenzy, whilst delicious free vegan food was gulped down gagging throats by passers-by.
Present were a contingent from the Liverpool Dockers’ Support Group. The only hiccup of the day came when the Sunflower Cafe van was impounded, for no apparent reason. Hard scrounged funds may now be needed to get it out of the nick.
The day’s activities climaxed with a short play ‘The Car on Trial’ with everybody’s favourite global-warming, eco-polluting, phallic extension up before the beak for its crimes against humanity and the planet. All in all, a sterling demonstration of the power of the groovy people against the forces of concrete.
