Oxford Reclaim The Streets

After a period of relative dormancy Oxford Earth First! has been relaunched, capitalising on the energy generated locally by the Newbury campaign. The focus of the group will be on local issues, predominantly development schemes and transport.

The inaugural action was on Friday 30th August, where the monthly Critical Mass was followed by a hugely successful Street Party in Broad Street. About two hundred people turned up and played music, danced and feasted. The three policemen present enjoyed the event too with their biggest complaint being that since they had not been forewarned they were still in their short sleeves and feeling the chill by 9pm. However, this was largely due to them being less responsive than Oxford’s other residents, to adverts for the party in the form of banners that had been dropped from the Carfax building the week before.

Ever since receiving massive criticism for their rough treatment of protesters over squatting two years ago, Oxford police have been very keen to avoid conflict. This leaves many interesting possibilities for the future!
