On 31st July Pioneer Aggregates was given permission to extend Durnford Quarry at Ashton Court park near Bristol. This Australian transnational wants to ‘move’ twenty one acres of orchids and ecologically diverse grassland and then blast the rock underneath to sell to road builders. This particular quarry supplied aggregate for the roads through Twyford Down, Solsbury Hill and the Bristol Spine Road. Actions to target this company are planned.
More positively the construction of the Avon Ring Road (Stage 2) through Siston Common, which was due to start in Spring ‘95, has been delayed yet again because the Department of Transport failed to turn up to the High Court hearing in July. Direct action has been promised for years if this project actually happens, but at the moment local campaigners are still hoping that their legal challenge will succeed.
