Naburn Woods

Naburn Woods is a disused hospital site which was demolished several years ago and has been reclaimed by wild nature. Despite the fact it is a popular dog walking area and teeming with wildlife, planning permission has been given for a huge out of town shopping centre, designed to attract people from all over Yorkshire.

The campaign against the development has taken a variety of forms: many shops in York are now collecting boycott pledges, and recently the community expressed their ideas for the future of the area in a ‘planning for real’ exercise. Although work (by developers BAA McArthur Glen) will not start until February, a camp has been set up and support is really needed from visitors. Contact: 0831 586938.
