New Women Prisons
At Eastwood Park Prison, near Bristol, the new cells, at 6 ft x 6 ft, are 30% smaller than the prison service’s own 1994 guidelines. Cells as
small as this were condemned as degrading and inhumane by a Royal Commission in 1878. 56% of women prisoners have mental health problems (Home Office study ‘91). Such inhumane conditions are bound to increase the already high rate of suicide attempts & self harm among women prisoners.
