Reclaim The Streets
Brighton, Feb 14th, for almost 4 hrs, North St was reclaimed from the car. In true valentine's style, pollution and aggression were replaced by community and lurve. Sussex pigs were left flat footed as hundreds occupied the road. Then the party started. People played, drummed, danced and boinged on a bouncy castle. As people were dispersing, the forces of the state moved in to re-establish their law and order. Despite loads of violence, the pigs found it hard to ‘clear’ the street in the face of people’s resistance. 43 arrests were made to reassert car and capital’s dominance. All but 10 charges were dropped. By going in so heavy ‘liberal Sussex police’ showed intolerance of people acting outside their control and threw down a gauntlet for the future. See ya soon boys in blue.
