Bloody Barrage Gets Bolloxed
Guess What! The Secretary of State for Wales has turned down proposals for a barrage similar to the one in Cardiff Bay. The £70m barrage across the River Usk at Newport was rejected last month by William Hague, on the grounds that it would damage the river and that the barrage's economic potency was flawed. The decision was welcomed, but environmental groups wondered why the Cardiff Bay Barrage is still being built. A reason could be that the Usk is one of Europe’s ‘top’ angling rivers. Fish stocks would be depleted with the barrage in place and surprise, surprise, this is where a few Conservative marginal seats lie.
