Opencast Mining

Garforth is a suburb of Leeds, close to an area with a strong deep mining tradition. Opencast mines are proposed for a belt of land around the town. The land threatened is primarily agricultural, though the mines approach the edge of Hawk’s Nest Wood and affect residential areas through subsidence and lowered water tables. The local campaign group, GATOC, is opposed to direct action and prefers to continue with lobbying efforts. Others in the town would be keen to see a direct action campaign. An action has/will occur on the 30th of May, Leeds EF! would like other EF groups and individuals to get involved. 0113 2629365.
