Killing For Oil
About 150 people gathered on Thursday 18th May outside Shell’s Annual General Meeting to hear Ogoni tribes people demand that Shell stop supporting Nigeria’s Military Dictatorship. The Ogoni tribe in Nigeria are being killed and locked up for protesting against the destruction of their homelands by Shell, so that the rich north can have oil to drive cars, pollute the air and thus build more roads. Ogoni leader Saro-Wiwa is on death row NOW The protest started with the usual rants and drums but as Big Ben struck 11 people rushed the lobby sitting down and blocking the entrance. Meanwhile, others climbed flag poles, lowering Shell's flags to half mast. Later one of the flags was burnt. There were 6 arrests and seriously heavy policing. Contact 0171 2542290. Let Shell know how you feel by organising actions in your area.
Britain still supplies arms to Nigeria while unknown numbers of civilians have been killed, particularly in the labour movement by these arms. Contact People's Embargo for Democracy in Nigeria, c/o PO BOX 256, London. SE11 5TH. 0181 202 6292.
