Carmel Woods

The battle to save Carmel Woods in the Gwenlais Valley (site of the only turlough lake in the UK), South Wales from destruction through Quarrying is now in it's 12th year. The struggle continues to protect this beautiful area, which contains no less than 5 Habitats of European Importance. The two priority EC Habitats have been omitted from the governments proposed list of special areas of conservation, leaving the door open for the new quarry operators WIMPEY - stone quarried is destined to build roads!

The campaign has reached a crucial phase. The situation is very complicated but it would appear that there is no immediate danger that Wimpey will move into the woodlands. However, if Wimpey should try anything stupid, local campaigners will be out in force and as legend predicts "sound the bell to awake the warriors of Owain Llawgoch" in defence of the area.
