McLibel - Trial Latest

The court is currently listening to evidence on food safety and animal welfare.

Mr Walker, from McDonald’s sole hamburger supplier, explained how all raw beef supplies to the process plants are sampled, tested, and characterised as ‘satisfactory’, ‘passable’, and ‘unsatisfactory’.

He stated that ‘unsatisfactory’ relates to beef which has a total colony of more than 10 million bacteria per gram. He then admitted that such consignments are not rejected but are used for McDonald’s hamburgers. McDonald’s have admitted responsibility for a serious food poisoning outbreak in Preston in 1991.

The Employment section of the Trial begins late April. Forty exemployees will be testifying about the poor pay and conditions; trade union officials and activists from around the world will give evidence on McDonald’s hostility to trade unions.
