World Bank Candles Blown Out

Overseas Development Agency staff were given a taste of their own medicine when their doors were chained shut and a sandbag dam erected behind banners saying 'Unhappy Birthday World Bank and IMF'. Eviction notices in Thai were posted up: Many of the 2 million people being displaced by Bank projects are not consulted, given notices in foreign languages and told information is available in a far-off city. Later, protesters partied in the board-room of the World Bank in London. They were arrested for trespass on diplomatic property, but were later released without charge. Pan-Africanist groups protested outside the World Bank's office, and FoE protesters formed a human dam outside the Treasury. In Wakefield, people blocked the road to a conference on 'Export Opportunities Through World Bank Funding'. In late September people from across the world are going to Madrid to oppose major World Bank and IMF meetings and to attend the 6-day Alternative Forum.
