McLibel - McLiars

Attempts by McDonalds to silence its critics and turn the world into a huge burger joint continue. McProfits are suing 2 unemployed people for libel on the basis that they attended meetings and distributed a leaflet about their record on health, employment, the environment etc. The new trial date is 27th June, High Court, London, and it could last for up to 4 months.

The judiciary have decided that the issues are too complex for a jury, so wave good-bye to a fair trial. However, it is an unprecedented opportunity to spread the truth about the world’s largest cow mincers. The trial will hear from hundreds of witnesses on the following subjects: Packaging, nutrition, advertising, animals, environment, employment, publication, and the defendants.

Two new developments. 1) An MP has put down an early day motion about the case. This means that under parliamentary privilege any libellous allegations can be quoted without any fear of legal action (check this with London Greenpeace). 2) On the 27th May, Dave and Helen issued a counter claim against McD's for libel, following a leaflet which accused them of lying. This means that McD's will have to prove their claims in court. (Oh dear)

Money is desperately needed to pay for defence tribunals, no legal aid is available.
